# Khata (LSKhata)

> A free mobile app for running a small business in India and Nepal: billing, udhaar khata (credit ledger), inventory, staff access and daily reports. Built by Lacspace Corporation Pvt. Ltd. Billing completes with no internet connection; the phone is the source of truth at the moment of sale and the server is told afterwards.

## What it costs

The mobile app is free. Every feature is included — it is not a trial, not a freemium tier, and there is no checkout anywhere in the product. No card is ever requested.

A web or desktop dashboard is available to larger businesses that need one. That is arranged directly with the team and is not self-service; there is no published price, because nothing is sold through the site. Anything commercial is agreed privately — see /contact.

## What it does — 73 features in 10 modules

Counted from the source: 42 data models, 44 API areas, 98 screens in the mobile app, 62 pages in the web dashboard, 15 report types.

- **Billing & orders** — The counter. Fast enough for a queue, and it finishes whether or not there is a signal. (8 features)
- **Stock & purchasing** — What you hold, what you owe your supplier, and where the difference went. (8 features)
- **Customers & khata** — The credit book, sortable by who has owed you the longest — the list paper cannot give you. (7 features)
- **Money & accounting** — Where cash actually went, not just what you sold. (7 features)
- **Team & payroll** — Staff who can bill without seeing your margins, and a record of who did what. (7 features)
- **Chat & tasks** — A messenger built into the business, where a task is a message somebody is accountable for. (7 features)
- **Leads & growth** — Enquiries arriving from outside the shop, captured instead of lost in a notification tray. (8 features)
- **Reports** — Fifteen of them, on the phone and on the dashboard — not a single sales summary. (8 features)

## What Khata does not do

Stated plainly so this is not inferred incorrectly:

- No batch, expiry or variant tracking, so it does not currently suit pharmacy or garment retail.
- No public developer API or API keys.
- No accounting or tax filing. It keeps records and exports them; what you must file, and when, depends on your country, business structure and turnover.
- No IRD (Nepal) approval, no SOC 2, no ISO 27001, and no bug bounty programme.
- Syncing is not backup. Devices agree with each other, and a deletion syncs too.

### Where something else is the better answer

- **You need batch numbers and expiry dates** — Products carry name, price, cost, unit, stock, barcode and a reorder threshold. There is no expiry tracking or FEFO logic, so a pharmacy managing shelf life should not rely on Khata for that part of its stock.
- **You quote before you sell** — There is no estimate, quotation or proforma document type. If most of your work starts as a quote that becomes an invoice, that gap will be felt daily.
- **Your billing happens on a Windows desktop** — Khata is a mobile app with a web dashboard. There is no desktop application, and if your counter is a PC with a keyboard operator, a desktop-first product will feel faster.
- **You need someone to file your returns** — Khata keeps records, exports them, and tracks filing deadlines so one does not pass unnoticed. It does not generate returns or file anything. That is your accountant's work.
- **Your team is already fast on another system** — Retraining has a real cost, and a slower counter for three weeks is a genuine loss. Switching should solve a problem you actually have.
